Islander accused of driving vehicle into man     15/9/11

A North Uist man has appeared in court accused of assaulting a fellow islander by driving a vehicle into him.

It followed an incident on the island on Monday when a man was injured after being knocked down on the road.

Robert Murray of Cidsean Dubh, Balranald, North Uist, faces three charges over the incident.

The 39-year-old appeared from custody at a short hearing held in private in Stornoway Sheriff Court on Wednesday afternoon.

Murray is accused of assaulting a man by driving a vehicle at him and colliding a vehicle into him. The other two charges relate to traffic offences.

Murray made no plea or declaration. Sheriff David Sutherland released him on bail while investigations continue.

The casualty was named locally as John Alan Maclellan. He is being treated in hospital in Benbecula. A Western Isles NHS  spokesperson said the casualty was in a stable condition.
