Cannabis grower fined      23/11/11

A Lewisman was caught growing cannabis plants in his home.

Scott Cormack previously pleaded guilty to producing cannabis plants at The Old Schoolhouse, Aird, Point between 1st January and 9th June this year.

At Stornoway Sheriff Court yesterday the 48-year-old was sentenced to two years probation and must attend drugs and alcohol counselling as well as carrying out 200 hours of unpaid community work.

His lawyer said police raided his home after a tip-off believed to be from his wife as the couple had a row over his cultivating the drug.

Urging the sheriff not to send his client to prison, he explained the growing kit was purchased over the internet but the cannabis was for Cormack’s own personal use to alleviate the symptoms of physical health problems.

Procurator fiscal David Teale said Cormack had set up a comprehensive growing area within the loft, in a section blocked off by plywood and well insulated with an electricity supply.

The six, almost ready plants, were worth £1,800 said the fiscal though Cormack’s solicitor pointed out half of them would be valueless as only the female plants would produce any cannabis.
