Ferry boss departs                    7/11/11

The top boss of Cal Mac is leaving the ferry company suddenly it has emerged.

Despite the shipping line recently winning a raft of accolades from the travelling public, managing director Philip Preston is due to leave in “early course as part of a re-focus” staff were told in a brief internal memo on Monday.

The message delivered on behalf of Archie Robertson, chief executive of David MacBrayne Ltd gave no further explanation why Mr Preston is departing so suddenly after18 years as an employee.

Mr Robertson’s message said: “Following internal discussions, Philip has agreed to step down from his role as MD and will be departing the company in early course as part of a re-focus.

“Throughout his employment with the company Philip has maintained excellent relations with colleagues and associates. Philip’s contribution to the company’s success has been valued.

“Philip leaves the company with both our appreciation of his dedication and professional service and with our very best wishes for the future.”

A Cal Mac spokesman said Mr Preston’s departure was “a normal part of any company evolution (where) people move on and roles change.”

Philip Preston was appointed managing director of the shipping line in April 2009. He joined the company in 1993 and previously held the post of operations director.
Western Isles transport chief Donald Manford confirmed the island council  received notification of Mr Preston’s imminent departure.

Mr Manford said he did not challenge Cal Mac right to seek changes in its point of focus.

However, he highlighted it seemed a curious development given that Cal Mac won an award for being best transport operator for two years running and also won the best British ferry company prize award.

Mr Manford said: “These awards were voted for by ferry passengers so, in light of that, I wonder what is driving this need for a need refocus.”

He added: “I am seeking an explanation from Cal Mac over what exactly is this refocus they are talking about and why it is so necessary for their managing director to have to unceremoniously go in such a fashion.”
