Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is urging Transocean to hire a local repair team to patch up its damaged oil rig, presently moored on the east coast of Lewis.

The council also seeks general discussions on decommissioning work.

The Transocean Winner drilling platform is laid up in Broad Bay awaiting repairs to make it safe before onward transportation for scrapping in the Mediterranean.

With 25 tanks ruptured and at risk of flooding, following its grounding at Dalmore, the 33-year-old structure is too unstable to be towed on a long voyage without risk of sinking.

Owners' Transocean are looking to moving it to a repair facility where the holed pontoons will be made watertight.

Alternatively, the company dispense with repairs and transfer the rig out of the sea and onto a barge to be towed south by a tug.

Council leader, Angus Campbell, wants the rig's owners to use island engineers.

In a letter to Transocean, Mr Campbell wrote: “We are, of course, very glad that there has been no significant pollution arising from the incident and that the installation has now been successfully relocated from Dalmore Beach to Broadbay.

"We are pleased that you continue to engage with the local supply chain and, given the significant and positive economic impact to the islands, would now ask that serious consideration be given to the use of local facilities and engineering expertise in carrying out the necessary repairs.

"As you will be aware, there is an established oil and gas supply chain in the islands with considerable lay down area at the Arnish facility and good connections for skilled workers to move in and out as required."

Secure additional storage for recyclable parts pending resale could be available at Creed Park on the outskirts of Stornoway, said Mr Campbell.

He added: "We would be very happy to work with Transocean, SMIT Salvage and other relevant key stakeholders to ensure that direct and indirect benefits are, as much as possible, retained in the islands.”

Transocean previously said there was insufficient water depth to take the rig into Glumaig Bay by Arnish.
