Stricken oil rig towed off rocks

22 August 2016

The stranded Transocean Winner rig has been successfully refloated.

Two tugs pulled the platform off rocks around 10.05pm on Monday night.

The holed rig is currently being stabilised in the open water off Dalmore in the west coast of the island.

Sixteen of its 25 holed and flooded bottom tanks were made watertight by pumping in compressed air which pushed out the seawater. The compartments were pressurised during the salvage operation.

Overnight, it will commence a tow to a safe shelter off Point on the east side of the island.

It is due to arrive there on Tuesday evening after a 22 hour voyage.

The rig will remain in Broadbay until it is in a stable and fit condition to be taken to a suitable repair facility.
