Arctic Circle fundraising for Bethesda              16/3/13

Two Lewis women are undertaking a fundraising challenge for Bethesda hospice across the ice in sub-zero temperatures.

Sisters Alayne Barton and Hilary Heggie  are undertaking a dog sledding trek across the Arctic Circle.

Finnmark - which is the homeland for the indigenous Sami people - is on the same latitude as Siberia so temperatures could be fall as low as minus 25 degrees during the six day, 140 mile trip with huskies in the far north of Norway.

Hilary Heggie said: “We are doing this trip in memory of our mother, Ross Barton, who sadly passed away in August 2011.

“She had her final days in Bethesda and received amazing treatment that helped us all cope with a very difficult and emotional time. “

She added: “We wanted to do something that would take us well out of our comfortable everyday lives and test and challenge us to the extreme.  Dog Sledding seemed a good choice.

“We are funding our adventure ourselves but are hoping to raise awareness for the amazing work that Bethesda do along the way.  So far, thanks to a number of very generous people we have raised £1,100.”
