Opening event for new Bethesda charity shop                6/10/11

Bethesda Hospice has opened a new charity shop in Stornoway. The body relocated its retail fundraising showroom to the former Point One premises on Bayhead.

Bethesda plans to purchase the vacant property  by diverting the money spent on renting their Cromwell Street shop and their furniture outlet in Inaclete.

The new property is well lit and spacious while the open plan layout provides more floor space for displaying furniture, electrical goods and household items as well as books, bric-a-brac and soft furnishings.

Rev Malcolm Macleod, chair of Bethesda management committee, stepped in for retired shop manager Rena Crichton, who was away holiday, to cut the ribbon and declare the new shop open.

Bethesda general manager Carol Somerville recalled that it took Iain Sheep Macaulay,  the body’s first fundraising officer, three attempts to persuade the committee that operating a charity shop was a great idea.

For nearly 20 years, it has proved its worth - its sales are a vital contribution to the target to raise £200,000 a year for the hospice where care is given free of charge.

She praised the community for donating items which were sold on at low cost, providing an important social benefit by providing furniture and household at affordable prices.
