First 2 islands half marathon          17/8/11

Local and mainland runners are busy getting into training for a new half marathon which is being held for the first time on Saturday 27 August.

The 2 Islands Half Marathon starts in Berneray at 10.30am and finishes at Lochmaddy Community Hall, North Uist. It has been deliberately timed for when most of the other island races are finished, to give runners a late season opportunity to pull on the trainers and get out there into the elements.

It has also been timed to make it easy for as many people as possible to participate, whatever combinations of ferry or bus they are travelling on.

Runners will be bused from Lochmaddy, leaving at 9am, to Berneray and the bus will also connect with the ferry coming from Leverburgh and with the service bus for runners  coming from Barra, Eriskay and South Uist.

This will be a beautifully scenic linear route, which, while gently undulating, does not feature the killer hills of certain island runs! It is clear that it is capturing the imagination of runners from the islands and also from further afield. So the organisers are hopeful of a good turnout, some impressive times and, most of all, luck with the weather.

The cost is £10 (£8 members of Scottish Athletics) including lunch. Registration is possible on the day.

The 2 Islands Half Marathon is organised by North Uist Amateur Athletics Club.
