Belgium couple still in hospital after crash          27/10/11

An elderly Belgium couple are still in hospital after suffering serious injuries in a Lewis car crash.

Alfons Verbruekan drove on the wrong side of the road and smashed into a vehicle carrying a woman and child, Stornoway Sheriff Court heard yesterday (wed).

Verbruekan, 70, of 25 Lucca Stree, Sentneglas, Belgium, admitted careless driving near Knock Shool, Point, damaging both cars and injuring himself, his wife and the female driver in the oncoming vehicle on 2nd September.

His lawyer said he ended up in Point when he tried to get to North Tolsta in the opposite direction. He realised his mistake and reprogrammed his sat nav. But he lost concentration and got confused when he turned around and “just stayed on the wrong sde of the road.”

Fiscal David Teale said the couple were still in hospital in Belgium with serious injuries while the woman driver he collided suffered a fractured wrist and forearm.

Sheriff David Sutherland fined Verbruekan, who had 40 years of trouble free motoring, £300 and three penalty points on any future UK driving licence.
