Flood risk from westerly gales             13/12/11

Castlebay and Eoiligarry schools are shut due to the strong gale hitting Barra today.

There is a risk of coastal flooding due to a combination of high surge, strong westerly wind and waves.

Particularly at risk are low lying coastal areas and causeways exposed to the south west and west on the southern islands, from Barra to North Uist.

High tide in this area is around 8pm on Tuesday evening, though winds will have dropped slightly by then.

The public are advised to take care and to avoid areas at risk where possible.
