Crash youth being airlifted to mainland hospital           2/8/12

An injured youth involved in a car crash on the Barvas Moor road in Lewis this morning is being airlifted to a mainland hospital

Kevin Matheson is being flown for medical treatment to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

Mr Matheson who is in his very early twenties and lives on the Westside of the island was hurt in the smash. He was going to work and driving a car towards Stornoway when it was involved in a collision with another vehicle.

The apprentice electrician with Stornoway electrical firm N D Macleod was trapped in the mangled car after the accident which occurred around 7.30am.

Three fire crews - from Stornoway, Ness and Shawbost attended the incident and cut the casualty out of the smashed vehicle.

The youth was rushed to the accident and emergency department at the Stornoway hospital by ambulance. He was due to be flown to Inverness..

A Western Isles NHS spokesperson said his condition was stable.

A person in the other vehicle was able to get out before the emergency services arrived and was also taken to hospital.  The road was closed until 10am.
