Youth warned to be polite or face custody        1/8/14

A Lewis youth has been warned that giving any cheek to his mother would land him in jail.

Shaun Macleod would move from Stornoway to reside his mother’s house in Dunbarton if he could retain his freedom, Stornoway Sheriff Court was told today.

The 20-year-old changed his mind against being tagged after a recent taste of being in custody, the court heard.

Lawyer Angus Macdonald said Macleod would accept any conditions if he could retain his freedom.

The solicitor promised his mother would voluntarily report Macleod of Steinish, Stornoway, to the authorities for “any back chat, drinking or nonsense of any sort.”

The 20-year-old had previously been tagged under a community payback sentence for kicking a female police officer, struggling with police and shouting and swearing in Stornoway town centre on 14 December last year.

But he “couldn’t stand the tag any longer” and landed in custody for breaching the order.

However, he did “not enjoy his two weeks in custody,” and would accept any conditions to stay out of jail said the lawyer.

Macleod also previously admitted disorderly behaviour by refusing police officers request to leave a Stornoway nightclub in December.

In addition, he accepted he breached another tag order by using threatening behaviour on Lewis Street, Stornoway, on New Year’s Eve.

Sheriff David Sutherland placed Macleod on a tag for one year including accompanied by a daily 9pm to 6am curfew at 37 McColl Avenue, Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire.
