Two ‘youth champions’ have been appointed by the comhairle.

Cllr Finlay Stewart will cover Lewis and Harris while Cllr Paul Steele carries out the role in Uist and Barra.

The ‘champions,’aim to liaise with young people throughout the islands and give them a voice.

The council said the appointments will build on its aim of supporting the development of youth engagement in the Western Isles.

Mr Stewart said: “I am delighted to be a ‘youth champion’ as I think it is so important that our young people play a role in shaping our communities and having a say.

“ think one of the roles of the youth champions is to make sure that our young people are heard at a national level and I am committed to encouraging national organisations to come to the Islands to work with young people here.”

Cllr Paul Steele said: “Young people have much to offer their communities. In the islands young people play an amazing role in sport, the arts, charity fund raising, caring and much, much more. It is important that their contribution is recognised and that opportunities are provided for young people which enable them to fulfil their potential.”
