Young engineers success at Murrayfield              20/6/14

Four pupils from Sgoil Lionacleit recently took part in a national competition as part of the ‘Celebrating Engineering’ event at Murrayfield.

The pupils were taking part in a competition organised jointly between the WEIR group and Strathclyde University department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management.

Pupils were given the task of designing, manufacturing and testing a working water pump using a 3D printer.

The school has been provided with a 3D printer and Mr Fraser, the head of the Art and Technical Faculty, has been working on the project with a group of pupils on Friday afternoons after school.

On the day of the competition, Sgoil Lionacleit Young Engineers club set up their pump and explained the design process to the judges, who were impressed by the quality of work that the boys had produced. With the motor and tubes connected, the pump ran well and impressed judges and other groups with the flow rate produced.

Competition was fierce with Sgoil Lionacleit up against nine other schools and the island pupils were placed second overall in the competition.
