A group of young crofters are set to form their own branch of the Scottish Crofting Federation (SCF) to bring a younger perspective to crofting advocacy work.

One of the outcomes of a recent gathering in Assynt was young crofters signing up to the idea of forming a group.

A meeting in Inverness last week confirmed this and the meeting voted unanimously to accept the invitation to form a branch of the SCF.

A spokesperson for the branch, James Shewan, said: “We know that SCF has a long history of fighting for crofting so we want to be part of that.

“But, no offence meant, people are getting older and we feel it is time for younger crofters, and those aspiring to be crofters, to get more involved and bring the young folks’ voice out.

“It is our future and it is up to us to help protect crofting and to make sure it thrives. We want to give the young person’s view to those that have the power to change policy that affects crofting.”
