Over 600 participants ran, jogged or walked the three miles distance to the mouth of the River Creed and back within the Lews Castle grounds - making it the largest sporting participation event in the Western Isles.

The annual run - which marks its 10th anniversary this year - raises funds for the Lewis branch of Cancer Research UK.

Eilidh MacKenzie from Holm ran the fastest time in the event’s history, repeating her victory from the first race in 2007. In between times she has become a Scottish International athlete and winner of the most medals for the Western Isles at the NatWest Island Games.

Organisers Tony and Kirsty Wade said: “We want to thank everyone who braved the elements to make the day really special.

“It was a fantastic effort by everyone who took part; there were so many personal stories that make the event unique.”

A record-breaking number of women took part in the Womens’ Cancer Challenge in Stornoway despite heavy rain showers on Saturday.

The aim of the event is to encourage women to become more active with the long term health benefits that this brings as well as raising money for a good cause.

Organisers thanked everyone who made the event happen including The Stornoway Trust, Lews Castle College, Grillburger, Tesco's, Ferguson's Boiler Services and all the volunteers who gave up their time to help.
