The annual Women's Cancer Challenge 5k run is taking place this Saturday.

A large turn-out is hoped for - previous events have seen over 500 island ladies join in the popular fundraiser, which celebrates its ninth year this May.

Entry forms and the specially designed 2015 event t-shirt are now available at Lewis Sports Centre.

Entry is £10 and t-shirts are priced £12, with all monies donated to the Lewis branch of Cancer Research UK.

Entries can also be made online at www.cancerresearchuk.org/support-us

The run starts at Lews Castle College, following the shore road out to the River Creed mouth then back to finish at Lews Castle Green.

Town venues are also getting involved such as Harris Tweed seamstress shop By Rosie which has, for the third year running, teamed up with the Harris Tweed Authority to help raise funds.

The Authority has donated gorgeous pinks tweeds to the Women's Cancer Challenge cause; and Rosie will make a selection of purses and small bags from the cloth – with half of every sale going straight to Cancer Research.

“There will also be a complimentary glass of fizz and health (and not so healthy) treats for all the ladies who take part in the challenge,” said Rosie.

In addition, Rosie is donating 20% of all shop sales on Saturday to support the event.

The Women's Cancer Challenge 5k is always a superb social event with friends, family and workmates joining forces to train together and enjoy the 5k; all the while raising money for a very worthwhile and serious cause.

Event organiser Kirsty Wade said: “Recent cancer statistics demonstrate how advances are being made to combat this disease (thanks in part to the work of Cancer Research UK) and yet every year we seem to lose someone we know to this disease.

“Even if it is raining on May 16, just come along and get wet to help beat cancer,” she added.

“It's only three miles – at most it's only going to be an hour out of your day. Together we can make a difference in a way that individually we can not. And the sun might shine as it has done before!”

Participants' stories, information and photos of past years Women's Cancer Challenge 5k events can be found on the event's Facebook page 'Women's Cancer Challenge'.

Entry forms can be downloaded at www.cne-siar.gov.uk/isl.
