A woman has died following an incident at Nisabost beach in West Harris.

The alarm was raised round 7.45am this morning..

Coastguard teams and the RNLI were called out.

The 50-year-old was recovered from the water by Stornoway coastguard helicopter.

She was flown to Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway where she was pronounced dead. Her next of kin is aware.

It is understood police are following up reports that a large wave may have washed the woman into the sea.

The sea was at its high tide peak at the time.

The woman is said to have been on a photography trip to the island with a group from England.

Inspector Jane Nicolson said: "Our thoughts first and foremost are with the woman's family and friends.

"We are carrying out enquiries to establish the full circumstances which have led to her death and this work is at an early stage.

"The death is currently unexplained, though initial enquiries suggest there are no suspicious circumstances.

"We are grateful for the assistance of our partners in the emergency services and members of the public in relation to this incident."
