►      Windfarm cash frozen

A second attempt in trying to drum up interest in a windfarm trust has been successful.

Plans for an earlier ballot for the Western Isles Development Trust (WIDT) were abandoned due to a lack of interest from islanders.

New directors from each of the Lewis, Harris and Uist areas are Keith Dodson (Lewis) and Andrew D Dick (Uist).

Also appointed is a representative from The Bays of Harris Steering Group (Harris), and a representative from Barra & Vatersay Community Ltd (Barra).

The WIDT was set up by the council to reinvest millions of pounds worth of windfarm community benefit into economic, environmental, cultural and social projects for the benefit of islanders.

Over time, if a subsea cable is installed, WIDT plans to support community ownership of large scale renewable energy infrastructure with the objective of addressing fuel poverty through access to locally generated electricity.

Plans for elections to its board in April were cancelled after only one islander applied to the body following a recruitment drive to try and boost its small membership.

Recently, a handful of applications to join were received meaning there was enough people onboard to elect new directors.
