Warnings over risk of wildfires           10/7/14

A raging wildfire on Lewis has sparked a plea for people to be careful about naked flames near dry grass.

Steve Oliver, Stornoway fire station commander, urged people to be responsible when out in the countryside.

Mr Oliver highlighted that the dry spell in the Hebrides caused by the sunny July weather has made the parched ground vulnerable to fire.

Although most wildfires occur in spring, “the weather is still getting warmer here and a carelessly discarded cigarette or match could soon start a fire of this type,” he highlighted.
