Volunteer whale rescuers are attempting to raise funds for a mammal rescue kit following the mass stranding of a pod off Skye.

A number of pilot whales died after 21 beached earlier this month.

All current whale pontoons - which helps with reloating efforts - are currently held on the east coast, many of which took hours to reach the Skye incident.

Area co-ordinator Noel Hawkins has started an online appeal aiming to raise £4,000 to secure a dedicated pontoon rescue kit that will be kept on the north west for future strandings.

Mr Hawkins said: "Sadly, one of the lessons learned on the day of the stranding was how ill prepared the Highlands are for such tragedies such as what took place.

"Time is a critical factor when these animals come ashore and we hope to be able to avoid such delays again in the future by ensuring a pontoon is on hand to be mobilised for any location from Skye up to Cape Wrath and even by ferry out to the Hebrides.”
