An exhibition of photos of the Westside and Carloway areas in Lewis in the 1970s has opened.

The images were captured by Swede Gösta Sandberg, during a trip to the island in July 1977.

Many photos show weavers, Arnol village, Carloway, mill, shielings, houses, transport, peat cutting and local services.

Gösta, a museum photographer from Alingsås in his home country, was based on the Westside for a period. He ventured out daily with his camera talking to those he met, photographing the scenes encountered along the way.

He sent back to the island over 100 photographs taken in various parts of the Outer Hebrides that summer.

A selection of particular interest to the Westside will be on display at Ionad na Seann Sgoil in Shawbost this and next weekend.
