Gales and ice warning for islands             1/1/12

A mix of bad weather is forecasted to hit the Western Isles over the next three days.

The Met office warns a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow showers will lead to icy stretches on roads and pavements on Monday morning. A layer of snow is likely, generally above about 200 metres, though with the risk of some at lower levels too. Accumulations of 15 cm or more are likely above about 400 metres over Scotland.

Meanwhile Island ferry services may face delays due to gales in the first half of this week.

Ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne warns there may be disruptions to its services on January 3 and 4 due to forecasted high winds.

CalMac is advising ferry travellers to check its website for the latest information.

A CalMac spokesman said: "Ferry customers may wish to consider travelling on January 2 or delaying their journeys until January 5 if their plans allow.

"We are grateful for the patience and understanding of all our customers at this time and wish them a Happy New Year.”

Blustery conditions are expected from Monday which may last through into early hours of Thursday.

Strong winds may ease on Tuesday but the Minch may be affected by a heavy swell in the Minch. Another gale is forecasted for Wednesday.

Winds are predicted to be stronger in the Southern Isles where gusts of 50 mph may be expected at times.

•  The Harris and Lochmaddy ferry, MV Hebrides, is back in operation after suffering a rare breakdown on Friday.  Cal Mac’s relief ship, the MV Isle of Arran, which was docked in Stornoway, was drafted in to provide a contingency service.
