SNP gives council leader the cold shoulder   16/2/13

The SNP has slated Comhairle leader Angus Campbell who demanded that the party’s MP and MSP back the local authority instead of launching a campaign against the council’s axing the Uist to Barra air service.

Donald Manford, who is the SNP council group leader and also a Barra councillor, said: “The island council leader relegates lifeline transport to the lowest 1% of importance and demands we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with him. He cannot be serious.”

Angus Campbell had urged the two parliamentarians to support the Comhairle to “campaign for increased funding for the Western Isles to help deal with these issues rather than turning on their democratically elected local council over individual issues they don’t particularly like.”

He said the air services were victim of a budget shortfall caused by frozen local authority funding.
