Blizzard predicted for Western Isles       16/3/13

Wintry weather and a strong northerly gale will affect the Western Isles on Sunday.

The Met Office has issued a yellow -be aware warning of snow and ice for the islands.

It said there would be temporary blizzard conditions over hills from 60mhp wind gusts.

It said up to three centimetres of of wet snow is possible at low levels over Skye, Lewis and Harris and revert to rain later.

It added: “Icy patches are likely to form on untreated surfaces during the early hours of Sunday, particularly where surfaces are wet after earlier showers and also where further showers of rain, sleet and snow occur during the overnight period.”

Rough seas are expected from storm force gusts overnight into Sunday.
