Island community projects win council funding   16/5/14

 

Six island groups have been awarded a total of £225,287 from the Comhairle’s community grants scheme.

 

Cllr Alasdair Macleod, the Comhairle’s Sustainable Development Committee chair said: “The high level of interest shown to-date and the quality of applications received demonstrates that these projects will contribute significant economic benefits to communities across the Outer Hebrides in the months and years to come.

 

“The Comhairle’s Economic Development service is accessible throughout the islands to support and assist properly-constituted groups with projects that will continue to create real economic development opportunities within local communities.”

 

Cothrom receives £50,000 to develop its ReStore training and recycling social enterprise through the construction of a new building at its learning centre at Ormiclete, South Uist.

 

Some £30,000 is being given to the community-elected Carloway Estate Trust to purchase the Carloway Estate on an amicable basis from the current landlord

 

Harris Gun Club will use its £12,000 funding to install three shelters over the main shooting stands in addition to installing a skeet shooting discipline.

 

The  £33,287 awarded to Kinloch Historical Society will help the body purchase the former Balallan school to create a café, laundrette, charity shop and museum.

 

Vatersay Community Association plans to utilise their £50,000 award to develop the local community hall to cater for larger community events, enhance current café facilities, and create shower, toilet, laundrette and office-space along with external decking area and managed beach-access, resulting in extra seasonal jobs.

 

The sum of £50,000 for Uist Wool will assist in constructing an unique drying-loft to air-dry washed fleeces using solar gain and natural ventilation.
