Surge for postal vote applications               10/9/14

A final batch of postal votes for the Scottish independence referendum has been sent out in the Western Isles following a surge in demand.

According to the latest figures on Wednesday, some 5,125 postal slips have been issued which is about 20% of the 23,000 or so electorate, said a spokesman for Western Isles Council.

The voting slips should be arriving on door mats this week in plenty of time to return them for polling day on September 18.

he Electoral Register is now closed for the referendum and anyone who did not register before the deadline of Tuesday September 2 will be unable to cast their vote. By law, late submissions cannot be accepted.

High demand for postal votes were anticipated in the Western Isles and postal slips were mailed out in a series of pre-planned staggered batches.

n other Scottish areas, there was a delay in issuing their final batches due to the volume of work for the external printers.

A voting statement has to be signed and returned along with the ballot paper

Postal votes have to be received back by 10pm on Thursday 18 September.

If required, on voting day, they can be dropped off at any polling station within the Western Isles or at the main council offices in Stornoway.
