The Western Isles Labour Party has renewed its commitment to putting the needs of the islands’ communities first at its recent annual meeting.

The membership acknowledged the issues which saw Labour suffer defeat in the recent General Election across the UK.

Members recommitted to working together to promote strong Labour values across the islands.

Speaking after the meeting, newly elected chair, Billy MacKinnon said: “I am very pleased to have been tasked with leading our local Labour Party as we seek to show our fellow islanders that we will always put the Western Isles first.

“We will engage with our communities at a local level and demonstrate that Labour values will make a real difference to their lives.”

He added: “The high turnout of members at our annual general meeting, along with the increasing membership of the party in the islands, clearly demonstrates that Labour is very much a vibrant party in the Western Isles.

“Listening to people from all parts of our islands it is clear that there is need for urgent action on a range of issues including; poverty, transportation, social care, health and education.”
