Swimmer Kara Hanlon has won gold for the Western Isles at the NatWest Island Games taking place in Jersey.

The 18-year-old clinched first place in today's 200 metre breaststroke finals - a tight one second ahead of Laura Kingley from the Isle of Man.

Kara - from Stornoway - is also awarded a silver medal for the women's 50 metre breaststroke, very narrowly missing out on first place against Shetland's more experienced Andrea Strachan.

Kara is also the fastest woman ever at the Island Games' breaststroke event, breaking the previous record with a time of  31.33 seconds in the preliminary heats.

Weather in Jersey has been sizzling with Tuesday's 33°C making it the hottest June day since records began. Competitors are urged to take precautions over hydration and sunscreen.

Battling the scorching temperatures, Donnie Macleod finished first in the men's 800 metre final, winning gold in a time of 1:53.89.

Eilidh Mackenzie takes home silver from a extremely close race in the women's 1500 metre final race, conceding gold in a photo finish.

In the shot putt event, Eve Carrington from Lewis won bronze - her fifth medal out of six Island Games. She came in a brave fourth in the 400 metre race

The Macphee sisters from South Uist have secured three medals between them.

Kerry took gold after taking the lead in the mountain biking cross country race.

Not far behind in second place, was younger sister Kirsty to be awarded a silver medal on her first appearance at the games.

The duo's success resulted in gaining gold for the top team spot.
