►  Western Isles medal triumph at Island Games

The Western Isles have tallied up 13 medals so far at the NatWest Island Games in Jersey - making it the most successful appearance for the Hebrideans at the biennial sporting event.

The Macphee sisters from South Uist provided a second double act by clinching a further three medals in the mountain bike criterion competition today. Despite a pit stop delay for a wheel change after a puncture, Kerry slogged it out to win gold. Sibling, Kirsty, took silver for second place. Their joint success gained the team prize for the Western Isles.

The pair also clinched a similar haul of three medals in the mountain bike cross country event yesterday.

In the pool, Kara Hanlon won silver for second place after an extremely close finish in 100 metre breaststroke competition this evening - her third medal in the games. The teenager already won a gold medal plus silver in earlier swimming events marking the first time the Western Isles has been listed amongst the swimming prizewinners.

Donald Walker of Uist hit joint bronze with his shooting skills at the automatic ball trap clay shooting event. Until now the Western Isles had never picked up a medal at this discipline at the Island Games.
