A gale and strong winds are forecast to affect the Western Isles until Thursday, bringing unusually windy conditions for early May.

Heavy rain showers will accompany the complex band of low pressure passing over the north of Scotland.

Wind speeds up to severe gale force nine are predicted for times during the period.

This evening’s ferry services face delays as northeasterly winds strengthen to gale force which could see gusts between 40- to 50 mph.

On Wednesday , further ferry disruptions can be expected in rough seas and high waves. Heavy rain will continue with wind direction changing to blow from the north west. Gust speeds could be nearly 60 mph in the afternoon. Heavy seas are likely off the west coast of the Hebrides.

Blustery winds and rain are set to continue on Thursday, easing over the day.
