Western Isles ferries stormbound in harbour

22 March 2024

Stormy seas and strong winds are led to a mass cancellation of ferry sailings today.
Most Western Isles ferries will not venture out of port today due to the adverse conditions which peaked at storm force 10 earlier.
All mainland links are cancelled including Castlebay, Lochboisdale, and Stornoway routes. Neither did the Skye triangle service operate.
Sailings between Berneray and Leverburgh are also affected.
The Sound of Barra timetable tentatively resumed in the morning. Due to ongoing adverse weather MV Loch Alainn will operate on a sailing by sailing basis and remains liable to disruption or cancellation at short notice.
Gale force winds and rough seas are forecast to continue into Saturday though island ferries plan to resume sailings.
With MV Hebrides out of position in Tarbert, a revised timetable for Harris and North Uist will operate on an extra long day for the ship over Saturday in a bid to clear a backlog of traffic.
CalMac said there is a possibility of MV Isle of Lewis running to Oban on Saturday, weather and sea state permitting.
