Western Isles exam results above national average 6/8/14
For the first time Western Isles schools presented the new national qualifications this year as part of Curriculum for Excellence.
Results across the islands, including in the new qualifications, were above the national average.
National 5 results indicate that 83% of S4 pupils in the Western Isles achieved a pass, compared with a national pass rate of 81%.
80% of those presented at Higher level in Eilean Siar achieved a pass, while the national figure was 77%. This represents a local increase in percentage passes on the 2013 figure of 77% and an increase in A grades from 24% in 2013 to 27%.
Of those presented for Advanced Higher in Eilean Siar, 97% achieved a pass, whereas the national pass rate was 81%.
At National 4 level, 94% of S4 students in Eilean Siar achieved a pass (A-
These are very different qualifications from Standard Grade with new course work and assessed in a different way so direct comparisons with S grades are not meaningful.
Overall in Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, 1270 S4 students were presented at National 5 and 667 at National 4.
At Higher level, entries have decreased from 973 in 2013 to 877 in 2014, but at Advanced Higher, entries have risen from 96 in 2013 to 109 across the authority in 2014.
