The Western Isles' Scottish Conservatives have launched the process of selecting a candidate to fight next year’s Scottish Parliament elections.

Buoyed by the number of islanders who voted Conservative at the May poll for Westminster, returning the best local result in 14 years, the association said it is reviewing a list of prospective parliamentary hopefuls for Holyrood.

The local party’s annual meeting reported new people joining, increased financial contributions and fresh support from all corners of the Western Isles.

Local chairman, Ranald Fraser, thanked the loyal members of the association who independently funded the election campaign.

For the first time they secured a campaign office in Stornoway town centre, manned by volunteers.

Mr Fraser expressed thanks to candidate Mark Brown for his efforts during the campaign.

MSPs Jamie McGrigor, Annabel Goldie, and Mary Scanlon also travelled to the islands to campaign.

Previous chairman Murdo Macleod has retired from the role and was thanked for all his hard work and efforts during his tenure.

The association generally meet every second month in Stornoway with the next scheduled for 26 November.

The planned programme for the year includes a function at Christmas and a Burns Supper in the New Year.

Office bearers elected at the AGM were: Ranald Fraser, chairman; Donnie Macleod, vice-chair; Murdoch Graham, secretary; Peter Macleod, treasurer; Elizabeth Macphail, minute secretary.
