Earlier, salvors weather conditions had "unfortunately deteriorated which will delay the operations."

Sunday is presently ruled out but now they may now go for a possible lull which the new forecast shows for Saturday.

On Thursday an oil pollution exercise around the rig was cancelled due to the rising wind.

Colin Mulvana, the UK Government's deputy salvage advisor, said a decision for the loading operation would be made on Friday morning.

He said salvors have discussed the new forecast for Broad Bay - which indicates a "narrow band" of good weather on Saturday - with the Met Office.

Mr Mulvana said a low pressure system will cause the "winds to increase considerably."

Even yesterday's oil spill exercise "had to be cancelled because the weather got increasingly worse and (the wind) moved round slightly which didn't make it safe to try."

For loading the oil rig onto the ship, "there are critical points within the operation where it needs wind speeds of 15 knots - we cannot have any higher wind strength than that," he added.

"Narrow" weather window may open up for oil rig loading operation

22 September 2016

A "tight" weather window has opened up which may give a chance to load the Transocean Winner oil rig onto a ship.

Forecasts of strong winds and choppy seas threatened to postpone the complex operation previously due to take place on Sunday.
