Storm and gale warnings are in place until Monday night

 

Nearly 5,000 Western Isles homes were without electricity on Saturday.

 

The number of people affected by powercuts had increased by around 50% after a second storm on Friday night.

 

999 and 101 phone services have been knocked out in some districts after the telephone network was damaged.

 

Community staging posts have been established in Lochmaddy police station, Benbecula coastguard station, Tarbert fire station, Leverburgh fire station, Scalpay fire station, Ness coastguard station (South Dell) or Uig Coastguard station.

 

To raise the alarm, seek help or report incidents to fire, police, ambulance, GP, coastguards, people are advised to go to these centres.

 

Coastguard vehicles are patrolling affected villages and can be stopped to notify any need for help.
