A proposed start date for the new Stornoway ferry is set to be postponed as a forecast spell of strong winds delays completion of harbour works.

Cranes have to stop operating in windy conditions at the fendering installation and redevelopment at Stornoway’s number three pier.

A wave of bad weather is likely to affect the harbour all this week.

Gusts between 30 to 40mph are expected from Monday afternoon into Tuesday.

Later on Tuesday, a band of wind is due to increase in strength with strong to possible gale force winds predicted through to Saturday.

Hebrides News recently highlighted adverse weather conditions could extend the pier strengthening works - and delay the Loch Seaforth’s first sailings - beyond New Year.

The pencilled in date of this weekend in for the ferry’s arrival is now set to change.

The harbour board previously said it hope the works would be finished so the ferry would arrive by Christmas - but all was weather dependent.

The £42 million MV Loch Seaforth is laid-up on the Clyde until the pier is ready.

Construction is ongoing 24 hours a day at Stornoway harbour.

An update on the ferry start date and the pier works is expected this week.
