Lewis resident David MacLennan has been announced as winner of the ‘New Gaelic Songwriting’ Hands up for Trad competition with his song ‘An t-Each Uisge.’

A part time teacher, David also tutors guitar, melodeon and folks groups, as well as running informal music sessions for pupils with additional support needs.

He also sings with Còisir Sgìr a’ Bhac, plays in ceilidh band ‘Meantime’, and has been developing his interest in songwriting over a number of years.

Simon Thoumire, Creative Director of Hands up for Trad, said: “David’s entry made an impression. First and foremost, it has a beautiful melody and we could imagine choirs really enjoying singing it together.”

‘An t-Each Uisge’ was inspired by the myths and legends of Gaelic culture; particularly the folktale surrounding a loch in Ross-shire which would never freeze over.

Local legend told that the Each-Uisge – the supernatural water horse spirit – would allow his human wife to light a fire at the bottom of the loch, and the smoke rising from the chimney would warm the water and prevent the loch from icing over.

David’s winning song will now become part of the Hands up for Trad ‘Renewing the Tradition’ downloadable song book, available to choirs as part of Scotland Sings, and being arranged by Mary Ann Kennedy.
