Some £240,000 improvements to the water network in the Western Isles are underway.

Over the next four months, ageing sections of water mains will be replaced with new polyethylene pipes which will help to reduce the number of bursts along the network in Flesherin and Aird in Point, Lewis.

In Vatersay the new mains will replace the existing vulnerable undersea pipe at Bagh Chornaig with a new pipe located in the ground around the coastline. Contractor, MacAulay Askernish, expects the project to last for approximately three months.

Diane Burgess, Scottish Water’s regional communities manager for the Western Isles, said: “This significant investment will be a welcome improvement for the local communities involved.

"I’d also like to reassure residents that we will work hard to minimise disruption while we carry out this important work.”

Engineers temporarily shut down the water supply while working on particular sections of main and will give customers advance notice if a shutdown is necessary.

During the works some customers may also experience low pressure and discoloured water – this is perfectly normal and customers should turn on the cold water kitchen tap until water runs clear.
