Hundreds of people in the Broadbay area of Lewis are urged to conserve water after lack of rain in recent weeks.

 

Around 1,000 homes between North Tolsta and Back are affected.

 

Scottish Water is advising customers served by the North Tolsta reservoir to use their water wisely.

Similar advice has been issued to people in South Uist where an overland pipe has been installed to import water supplies from Benbecula.

 

Despite rain in many parts of Scotland in recent days and weeks, parts of the Western Isles have continued to experience low levels of rainfall, said the utility firm.

 

Scottish Water is continuing to monitor water levels in the Western Isles to ensure it can implement measures, where necessary, to maintain supplies of drinking water to customers.

 

Peter Farrer, Scottish Water’s chief operating officer, said: “We are encouraging everyone living and working locally to take simple steps to use water wisely.

 

“By making small changes to our habits we can significantly reduce water usage without compromising our quality of life.”
