Islanders warned against using unapproved abattoirs    18/12/13

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has warned people about the use of unapproved slaughterhouses following the conviction of a Lewis man over food safety rules and not keeping health risk material like spinal cords away from where they could contaminate raw meat.

A Comhairle spokesman said: “This result should hopefully be a deterrent to any other individuals considering similar activities.

“Crofters are reminded that it is illegal to use unapproved slaughterhouses which have no controls on hygiene, welfare and food safety.

“Members of the public receiving meat should ensure that it comes from approved abattoirs where it is health checked and certified with a meat stamp.”
