Some 70 years after the end of WW2 a Lewis man who served on ships transporting essential wartime supplies through U-boat infested seas has finally been presented with his campaign medals.

 

Alexander Campbell, 92, known as Sandy Ingie, of Builnacraig Street, Stornoway, served as an able seaman during the hostilities.

 

He sailed on the dangerous convoy routes supplying the allied North Russia as well as undertaking voyages on across Atlantic with food and goods from America.

 

Convoy ships were highly vulnerable to attack by German U-boats.

 

Mr Campbell, now aged 92 years and suffering from dementia, was presented with his campaign medals at the Solas Day Centre in Stornoway by Lord Lieutenant Alexander Matheson, last Friday.

 

He received the new Arctic Convoy Star as well as the 1939-45 Star, War Medal,

Atlantic Star with France and Germany clasp,and the Africa Star with clasp.
