► Bays of Harris hope turbines will put wind in their sails

Permanent residents living within the boundaries of the Bays of Harris estate are asked to check they are eligible to participate in the community buyout ballot.

A vote over whether or not the community should purchase the 10,000 acre estate is to be held in 2015.

Residents who wish to vote over the buyout but are not registered on the electoral roll should notify Katie MacKinnon of Innis na Sith, Stockinish, by 5th January.

Early in 2015, residents will be invited to attend public meetings where the results of economic and renewable energy feasibility studies will be presented.

The Bays of Harris Estate is owned by the Hitchcock family who bought it for £5000 after the death of Lord Leverhulme, a founder of what is now the Unilever multinational giant, in 1925.

The 30,000 acres of coastal crofts, hills and moorland encompasses the vast majority of the south end of Harris, from Dieracleit towards Leverburgh, the main village in the district which is also the port for the Southern Isles ferry. It also includes the island of Berneray which is off the coast of North Uist.
