Winds of up to 80mph are predicted to hit exposed areas of the Western Isles as a band of severe weather passes over Scotland mid-week.

Wind speeds will rise on Tuesday with a  force eight or nine gale affecting the area at times.

This is forecast to intensify to storm force through Wednesday and into Thursday.

Frequent wintry showers will bring an additional hazard.

Rough seas and prolonged strong winds will result in waves being unusually high, warns the Met Office.

There is a risk of waves overtopping roads and westerly exposed causeways.

There is the potential for powercuts and disruption to travel says the Met office.

The storm will be caused by a deep low pressure system moving eastwards between Scotland and Iceland.

There is some uncertainty in the track and depth of this low and therefore in the exact wind strengths.

However a period of severe gales appears likely, as well as the potential for storm force winds over western parts of Scotland, say forecasters.

Gusts of 60-70 mph can be expected with 70-80 mph in northwestern exposures.

With frequent heavy, wintry showers, driving conditions are likely to be very difficult. Also, large waves could pose a risk of spray and overtopping to western and northern coastal areas of Scotland.
