A new village shop on Lewis has shut after 18 months of trading.

Michael Fitzpatrick used his own cash to set up the store for the Shawbost community on the west coast of the island.

The premises closed its doors on Saturday.

Mr Fitzpatrick said: “It has been a pleasure and a a privilege and though bruising and disappointing I am still grateful for the experience and the fact I met some wonderful people."

He added: “I tried everything I possibly could to make my dream of running my own shop succeed.

“It has been a bruising journey that has taught me a lot.

“Thank you to those who supported me no matter what. I appreciate it.”

Mr Fitzpatrick said he hoped to write a book about his experience with the venture.
