A billionaire is touring around the Western Isles in his £75 million super yacht.

Jim Simons - who lives in New York - is said to be one of the world’s smartest mathematicians. He made his fortune from investing management, using his skills in complex calculations to assess market risk.

Today, he and guests are in Harris. His boat, the Archimedes, anchored off Direcleit in East Loch Tarbert.

Later, they headed for Taransay for an overnight stay.

Mr Simons’ is on a holiday on the Archimedes, cruising around the scenic west coast of Scotland.

His yacht has called into Stornoway twice over the past fortnight.

Two guests joined him at the weekend after flying to the island on his £50 million private Gulfstream jet.

On Sunday, the 80-year-old billionaire took a taxi from number one pier to collect them from Stornoway airport.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Forbes estimates he is worth $20 billion.

Mr Simons was a codebreaker for the US during the Vietnam war.

In his mid-forties, he founded a huge hedge fund, Renaissance Technologies, which manages $63 billion.

He has donated $2 billion to education causes which aim to boost US youngsters’ maths and science attainment.
