Union president to address local government branch             20/3/14

Public services trade union UNISON’s national President, Maureen Le Marinel, is the guest speaker at the Local Government Branch’s AGM tonight (Thurs).  This is another major coup for the local UNISON Branch following an address by General Secretary, Dave Prentis, to its 2013 annual meeting.

Branch Secretary of Lancashire Police Branch, Maureen Le Marinel has held the position of UNISON President – the highest office a lay-member can hold – since June 2013.

Ms Le Marinel said: "Throughout my life, fairness has always been key. UNISON is not a banging on the table type of union - we want to find fair and reasonable solutions that are best for everyone. This is a guiding principle that will take me through my presidential term, as I help the union and public services face head-on some of the biggest challenges that we’ve encountered in my lifetime."

UNISON branch chairperson, Flora Somerville is “delighted that Maureen has accepted an invitation to address our members at the AGM. Maureen is an inspirational UNISON President who has experienced and overcome many personal challenges and hardships during the course of her working life."

In calling for a large turnout of Local Government Branch members at the AGM, Branch Secretary, Alison MacCorquodale, said: "The branch is very fortunate to have secured the attendance of such high-profile guests once again following the successful visit of UNISON General Secretary Dave Prentis last year - please make every effort to show your support by coming along to the AGM on Thursday."

Also addressing the AGM will be Mark Ferguson, Chairperson of UNISON’s Scottish Local Government Committee. Mark will provide the meeting with an update on UNISON’s pay campaign; what went wrong, and what UNISON will be doing to ensure fair pay for all its members in future.

The annual members’ meeting is an opportunity to find out what the local UNISON Branch has been doing on behalf of its membership during the past year. Details of the main issues it will be focussing on over the coming year will also be provided - such as the integration of health and social care, and continuing to address further cuts in services to people and communities across the Outer Hebrides.

The AGM is being held in the Comhairle Chambers in Stornoway at 3pm, with video-links to the Comhairle offices in Balivanich and Castlebay.
