Ullapool harbour is now able to accommodate the new ferry, MV Loch Seaforth, after upgrading works at the pier.

A new fender system has been installed, bollards positioned and steelworks fabricated by the main contractor RJ Macleod.

This means the pier is now capable of berthing the new ferry, which is significantly larger than the present vessel, MV Isle of Lewis.

Works on other parts of the redevelopment continue though the overall project is 95% complete.

Ullapool Harbour Master Kevin Peach is delighted with the progress with much of the work - all part of a £10 million redesign - looking set to be finished ahead of time.

Meanwhile the new Passenger Access System has been fully assembled with the Spanish manufacturer Adelte currently completing the wiring, commissioning and training prior to handover.

It is expected the access system will be in operation by mid-September though people with mobility difficulties will still have to use the ferry car deck until the terminal is completed.

Affected passengers and should contact Cal Mac locally for assistance.

Progress with the terminal building works is also progressing well with the roof to be installed this week which will shortly be followed by the new windows.

Mr Peach said the heating systems for the terminal have now been agreed along with the majority of internal details and finishings. The lifts have also been ordered and will be installed in November, it had been hoped to install the lifts earlier in the contract but unfortunately that was not possible.

It is predicted that the terminal building will be fully completed by the end of December.

Harbour Master Kevin Peach explained: “The majority of the works are now complete with time to spare and the ambitious caisson design has exceeded expectations with zero impact on ferry arrivals.

“The project has been a pleasure to manage with all parties working as a team to deliver a fantastic end result.”

He continued: “Ullapool Harbour Trust would like to take this opportunity to thank the travelling public for their continued patience during the build process and hope that this is rewarded with a first class travelling experience in due course.”
