Hebrides News

Sir,

What a great pity that UKIP don’t have a candidate standing in the Western Isles for the May election. Hopefully this will change before too long.

It is quite evident, if the deluge of letters to Hebrides News is anything to go by, that none of the main parties are able to tell the truth. In fact the reality is that none of them can be trusted. As for the SNP, it is about time the people of the islands voted them out and for good. They are an obsessive bullying political party with but only one main ambition, and that is to see Scotland become an independent nation – whatever the cost. I hope that wisdom will prevail on the islands on 7 May and voters will ditch this independence infatuated party.

Maybe it’s worth reminding ourselves what UKIP are about. Let me give you a flavour. They are, firstly, a breath of fresh air. Yes I grant you that their policies are not ‘politically correct’ but they tell you what the people, in general, are thinking an believe. They tell you the facts - the other parties can’t and will not.

And just in case readers think they are a ‘one issue’ party, like the SNP, they are not. In fact their plans for every single national policy on transport, education, health, defence, foreign policies, immigration etc are far much more impressive than any of the other parties. UKIP consists of people who are motivated because they don’t like what the other politicians are doing to this country. That is a fact and they have no hidden agendas.

The other parties are worried, and rightly so. They know that if we stay in the EU, they can’t change the damaging legislation affecting these policy areas I referred to, along with a huge range of others, because all of these issues and more are now bound by over…wait for it…125,000 EU directives. Only complete withdrawal from the EU, as advocated by UKIP will allow parliament to regain control of our own country. The UK belongs to the people of the UK not to the menacing authoritarians in the EC.

As for the view that if we leave the EU, they may not trade with us this is all silly nonsense. EU trade does not depend on EU membership. You will find that non-members Switzerland and Norway actually sell far more goods to EU countries than we manage to. It is also a fact that we buy far more goods from EU states than we are able to sell to them. Let’s get this fact into proper perspective - they need us more than we need them. In total since 1979, Britain has (up until 31 December 2012) paid in about…wait for it…£228 billion to the EC while it has received back in benefits just £143 billion.

The difference of £85 billion (yes, mind-boggling) has been Britain’s subsidy to the EU coffers. These figures are not exaggerated. Let me simply even further these simple statistics, by giving you the very latest update. The UK’s current contributions to the EU amount to some £12 billion a year or about…yes, wait for it…£33 million a day. Excuse me but this is £33 million too much and this is the amount UKIP intend to bring back to Britain.

A mach leis a h-uile party – a steach le UKIP.
