Coast erosion expert outlines machair shore protection   12/3/13

A workshop on tackling costal erosion is being held in Sgoil Lionacleit tomorrow.

Professor Jim Hansom of Glasgow University will provide guidance and information on soft shore erosion and sand blow at the event which starts at 7pm.

The  coastal erosion expert has researched the sea and climate effect on shorelines as well as finding practical ways to manage beach erosion.

Recently, he has undertaken path-breaking work with collagues on the effect of extreme storm wave impact on coasts. The modeling of these in wave tanks has international collaboration and overlaps with hurricane and tsunami research work.

Lochbosdale Amenity Trust, Oxfam, and the Climate Challenge Fund, is hosting the workshop which is part of the Coast Adapt Pilot Project aimed at mitigating the effects of coastal erosion in Hebridean crofting communities.  It is hoped the pilot will be followed by a full programme extending to all affected communities.

At tomorrow’s event there will be an opportunity to discuss local erosion issues and possible solutions with the project sponsor and speakers.
